Kunming emerges as top 10 destination for New Year travel

On January 1, data from Ctrip, Qunar, and Tongcheng Travel revealed that during the 2024 New Year holiday, the Chinese tourism market continued to heat up, with significant increases seen in the popularity of winter-themed travel such as skating and skiing, soaking in hot spring, and cold-avoiding tours.

Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Harbin, Chengdu, Kunming, Guiyang, Xi'an, Shanghai, and Shenzhen were the hottest tourist destinations during this New Year holiday.

Kunming's total tourism order climbed by 44% during the holiday season compared to the previous year. Outbound travel orders from Kunming residents also surged by 334% year on year. Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia were the most popular outbound travel destinations.

During the holiday season, cross-regional travel increased significantly. According to Tongcheng Travel data, southern visitors traveled north to see snow, while northern tourists headed south to escape the cold.

Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Tokyo, Phuket, Seoul, Dubai, Ho Chi Minh City, Manila, and Chiang Mai were the most popular outbound destinations, with Thailand taking three of the top spots. The most popular group trip package was a 6- to 7-day tour route from Bangkok to Pattaya in Thailand, followed by a 7-day route from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.
