The third National Conference on Reading opened in central Yunnan’s Kunming city on April 23, the World Book Day. The 3-day reading event features a lake-side book gallery, a grand reading gala and forums with diverse themes.
Li Shulei, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended the opening and delivered a speech.

With a theme of "building a book-loving society and sharing modern civilization", the reading event aims to inspire public involvement in reading and foster a culture that values quality literature.
Attendees at the event believed that the cultural strength from reading is inseparable in the effort to realize national prosperity and rejuvenation. In giving fuller play to the role of reading, China needs to construct a scholarly society, encouraging mass reading in depth.

They noted that reading should be conducive to the great Chinese nation and the Chinese path to modernization, and the classic works need to be valued to strengthen cultural confidence and cultural innovation in China.
The attendees suggested that traditional publishing houses, digital publishing businesses, facilities for reading services and laws for reading activities should be improved to create favorable conditions for nationwide mass reading.
