From January 1 to May 6, the Mohan border gate near the China-Laos boundary section in south Yunnan’s Xishuangbanna has been crossed by 1,012,789 persons, according to the Mohan cross-border inspection station.

The number marked a year-on-year increase of 89%, and behind record-high number are more people-to-people exchanges under the Belt and Road Initiative, the Chinese visa-free policy for international travelers, and Yunnan’s new scheme to boost provincial development.

Since the beginning of this year, the border inspection station has handled some 7,800 cross-border passengers per day, with the daily maximum reaching 12,000. The passengers involved those from 82 countries and regions, with the top five contributors being China, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and France.

In response to the international travel surge, the Mohan cross-border inspection station rolled out smarter services, optimized the customs clearance, and implemented the one-stop inspection mode.
