Vegetable growing enriches 4 million farmers in Yunnan
"Vegetables have become a crucial industry in Yunnan for increasing farmers' income, providing employment for over 4 million people," said a staff from the Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
Yunnan enjoys unique advantages in vegetable production. With a planting area of over 19 million Chinese acres (about 12,666.67 km2), the province has an annual vegetable output of over 30 million tons.
In Mangkai village of Shuangjiang county in Lincang city, villager Li Xuanhui was busy transporting the harvested ginger to sell at a cooperative. With the support of the cooperative, she planted ginger on 3 Chinese acres (about 2000 m2), and at the current market price, her income per acre is expected to reach 20,000 yuan.
Feng Lingjie, person in charge of the Leyuan vegetable planting cooperative in Shuangjiang, said that the cooperative has increased farmers' income with unified seedlings, techniques and purchase services.
The Yunnan vegetable industry association helped 5 vegetable enterprises to run business in Jingdong, cultivating 210 large-scale planting households and increasing income for over 5,000 local households.
"The price of chili peppers has stabilized at 15 yuan per kilogram this year, and the demand still outstrips supply," said Gao Rong, person in charge of Jingdong Weisheng Agricultural Development Co., Ltd.
The vegetable enterprises in Jingdong have driven the cultivation of vegetables for 22,000 households since 2022, with a production volume approaching 200,000 tons and an average household income increase of about 3,700 yuan.
