Unique Miss Universe Meghalaya

Normally, beauty pageants like Miss Universe aims to empower women to develop the confidence they need to achieve their personal best from appearance to intelligence. But Miss Universe Meghalaya was launched in
the state capital Shillong with an additional  mission. It was launched as part of the state’s commitment to promoting its soft power by harnessing the talents and potential of its youth in various arts including indigenous textiles.

In a dazzling ceremony at Vivanta, Khyndailad Hotel, on on May 15 the Miss Universe Meghalaya launch event was inaugurated by the Tourism and Arts & Culture Minister, Paul Lyngdoh, who was the Chief Guest. Federick Roy Kharkongor Commissioner and Secretary of Arts and Culture, Mr. Amjad Khan, Director of Operations & Marketing for Miss Universe India, Miss Arshina Sumbul, Miss Grand International India 2023, and Miss Sophiya Singh, Miss Asia Pacific India 2024 graced the event. The Miss Meghalaya Organisation orchestrated the event.

Paul Lyngdoh, unveiled the official crown for the upcoming Miss Universe Meghalaya. The official logo was introduced by Roy Kharkongor IAS. This was  followed  by an introduction to Miss Meghalaya, Glamanand Entertainment Pvt Ltd, and Miss Universe India, presented by the reigning Miss Meghalaya, Miss Stella Khongsni, and Mr. Amjad Khan.

Paul Lyngdoh highlighted the government’s initiatives to support and develop the soft skills of the state’s youth, particularly in music and the arts. He expressed his optimism that indigenous fabrics from Meghalaya would gain national and international recognition.

In a significant shift from previous methods of selecting Miss Universe India representatives, states now have designated State Directors to facilitate contestant participation across the country. Dominic Savio has been appointed as the State Director for Meghalaya by the Miss Meghalaya Organisation.

This event marks a significant step forward in celebrating and promoting the cultural and artistic talents of Meghalaya’s  youth on both national and international stages. Moreover, encouraging the youth to showcase their originality and creativity, he highlighted the opportunity for Meghalaya to become a global hub for cultural exchange.

Incidentally, the current Miss Universe pageant was founded in 1952 by Pacific Knitting Mills, a California-based clothing  company and manufacturer of Catalina Swimwear.
